Welcome Back Slackware

I couldn’t get Debian to work without hanging, so I tossed it. Instead I downloaded Slackware 10.1 and set that up, it was relatively painless actually. Now typing this from Firefox, using GNOME. Shocked that it’s not slower. Oh, also very happy that my wireless card no longer drops connections periodically, but I would like a battery indicator that wasn’t stuck on 0%.

Another note, Samba for some reason works better on this (i.e. it sees a Windows laptop) than it does on my desktop running Fedora. Hmm.

Next up? Testing suspend mode, getting Samba to work correctly, and figuring out how to best use this as a server and usable laptop.

For the curious, I decided to name this deberon.skidde.net, as in misspelled preterite form of “deber,” Spanish for “should.” There’s some meaning in there somewhere.

Installing Debian

So, I decided to get rid of Slackware on my laptop in favor of Debian, and so far it hasn’t been so great. I wanted to get rid of Slackware because I thought it was too hard to deal with (and I probably screwed up the installation to some extent, it was my first go-round) and I wanted to get some actual use out of my laptop.

Problem so far is that I can’t get Debian to want to install. First it hung on trying to set up sendmail, and then after each boot it stopped when loading boottime.kmap.gz. So it’s time for a format and a reinstallation that I don’t touch too much this time.

Update: So much for that, it froze again during installation. Why bother?

Mozilla Goodness on your WinCE handheld

Mozilla’s developing a version of its mobile Minimo browser for Windows CE. This is very, very good news, especially because putting Linux on most Pocket PCs is (currently) impossible. Could it be, a decent web browsing experience coming to a handheld near you?
