Mine was that the noise level had somehow gotten stuck at 0, and (for some reason) the tool had locked up the noise level control so that I couldn't change it. It never crashed for me, so if that's a symptom you're seeing then you'll probably have better luck on the <a href="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/contact/" rel="nofollow">Audacity help list</a>.
